Keloid scar |
Typically when you have a wound or injury, or following a surgery or a piercing your body will grow scar tissue over the affected area in response and in order to heal itself. In some instances, instead of remaining smooth and level with the rest of your skin, scar tissue can grow larger producing what is known as a keloid scar.
Although keloid scars are harmless they can grow quite large, ranging in colour and shape, and look unsightly causing anxiety. Depending on where they are located and how large they grow, keloid scars can also cause some discomfort. At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we can remove your keloid scar without a referral from your family doctor.
A keloid scar is the result of a wound healing response. Whenever a part of our body is in any way wounded, due to an injury, surgery, or even a piercing, our body will react by growing scar tissue over the affected area. Sometimes this scar tissue will take on a life of its own and grow larger than it should, creating a hard growth called a keloid scar. In rare cases, it can also grow over large surfaces of your body.
Keloid scars are not dangerous but they can cause cosmetic concerns depending on where they are located. They can also be tender or itchy and cause some discomfort depending on their size and location and when coming into contact with clothing.
The reasons behind the growth of keloid scars aren’t entirely known, though they are most likely passed on genetically. So you may be more likely to have a keloid scar if one of your parents had one. A variety of injuries can cause keloid scarring such as burns, wounds from chickenpox, acne, surgical incisions, piercings, as well as scrapes or scratches.
At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we have both non-surgical and minimally invasive surgical ways in which we can remove your keloid scar.
Keloid Injection
With our steroid injection treatment your provider will administer a local anesthetic to ensure that you feel no discomfort. He/she will then inject corticosteroids directly into your scar in order to stop the overproduction of elements and reduce the inflammation that is causing the scar tissue to enlarge.
Your scar might look lighter following your treatment. It may take some time and repeat treatments to fully remove your keloid scar. Typically we recommend repeat steroid injections spaced 3-6 weeks apart for developing keloid scars, and repeat treatments spaced 3-6 months apart for existing keloid scars.
Your Morpheus8 treatment will take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour and your provider will apply local anesthetic so that you feel no discomfort. For keloid scar removal treatment we recommend on average 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart, but because each individual case is unique, we will be able to offer an individualized treatment plan once you have come in for your consultation and we have assessed the extent of your keloid scar.
Another option in removing keloid scars is with our Venus Viva skin resurfacing treatment. This treatment is used for a variety of issues from rosacea to uneven skin texture, and is particularly effective in smoothing out skin irregularities and reducing the appearance of scars including keloid scars.
This treatment delivers nano fractional radiofrequency heat energy via tiny pins through the skin’s surface. During your treatment the area being treated may feel warm, and your skin may feel mildly sunburnt following your treatment, but otherwise it is entirely comfortable.
The advantage of our Venus Viva treatment is that it is good for all skin types. We typically recommend 4 treatments for optimal results.
Surgical Scar Revision
Surgical scar revision involves cutting out the keloid scar and stitching the skin back up with a special technique. During your procedure, your doctor will administer a local anesthetic in order to minimize any discomfort or pain. He or she will then surgically remove your keloid scar. Once fully removed any incision will be closed with stitches. Because the removal of your keloid scar will once again trigger a wound healing response (the response that caused your scarring in the first place) your doctor will most likely want to schedule some follow-up appointments in order to assess whether any additional treatment might be needed.
In most cases you can return to your normal work schedule and/or daily activities following your procedure. This is however largely dependent on the type of work that you do and the location from which your keloid scar was removed. You will need to take care that your work or any other activities do not re-injure the treated area.
The cost of keloid scar removal is dependent on the complexity of your case and what method is being used for removal. You will be given a firm quote once one of our surgeons has personally examined you at your consultation.
In some cases OHIP will cover certain minor procedures, it is possible that OHIP will cover the removal of a keloid scar. Following your consultation a referral will be sent to OHIP in order to determine this.
Given that keloid scars can be unsightly and create discomfort as well as anxiety for patients, there is unfortunately no guarantee that once removed they will not grow back again. Keloid scar growths are due to a wound healing response produced by your own body. With the keloid scar removal procedure, because the wound healing response will again be triggered it is very possible that a keloid scar will once again reproduce itself.
At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we treat keloid scar removal with a follow-up treatment plan that your doctor will discuss with you during your consultation. Although we do see a high rate of successful keloid scar removal procedures, we cannot guarantee that your keloid scar will not return.
During your consultation your doctor will discuss these and any other concerns you might have concerning your keloid scar removal procedure.
